Prince George County School Board Welcomes Dr. Joseph Cox as PGCPS’ Acting Superintendent

On Thursday, May 2, 2024, the Prince George County School Board selected Dr. Joseph O. Cox, Jr. to serve as Prince George County Public Schools’ acting superintendent effective Monday, May 6, 2024, following the announced retirement of Superintendent Dr. Lisa Pennycuff.
 
Dr. Cox most recently served as superintendent for Colonial Heights Public Schools, leading the district for 18 years and becoming the longest serving superintendent in the district's history. During his time as the division's superintendent, he supported numerous improvements to the quality of education and school life of students and the community.

Dr. Cox has also served as an acting superintendent in the City of Colonial Heights and Nelson County during his career.
 
“I am looking forward to working collaboratively with our parents, students, teachers, administrators, and staff, and I thank the Prince George County School Board for this opportunity to serve the community,” Dr. Cox said.

Prince George County School Board Chairman Jill Andrews said, "The Prince George County School Board is currently developing a detailed process for finding our district’s next superintendent as Dr. Cox serves as acting superintendent. A key pillar of this process will center on community engagement from our district’s stakeholders, including our staff, families, and community-at-large. We will share more information as we continue through this process."
