Superintendent's Message: Thank You & A Very Special Fall Break - Calendar Adjustment

October 14, 2021

Good afternoon Prince George Families,

I am writing to you today on behalf of our School Board and School Division Leadership Team to thank you and each member of our community for your support as we welcomed our students back to campus for the 2021-22 School Year one month ago. On September 8th, our teachers and staff opened the doors to the schools, allowing thousands of Prince George County students to return to some normalcy as we returned to in-person instruction after a year of hybrid learning. This feat would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of our school division's entire workforce, our families, and the Prince George County community.

With the first month of school coming to an end, we recognize the importance of support. As we encountered during the last school year, students and families continue to face challenges presented to us by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, our students and community continue to thrive as we all do our best to face this extraordinary time in our world together.

In an effort to provide opportunities for rest and recovery during the school year, a calendar adjustment has been made coinciding with Thanksgiving week. A special Fall Break will be observed beginning Monday, November 22nd, during Thanksgiving week. As part of this Fall Break, Monday, November 22nd, and Tuesday, November 23rd will be converted from regular instructional days to holidays. All PGCPS school campuses and offices will be closed these days.

Schools will remain closed Wednesday, November 24th through Friday, November 26th for Thanksgiving Break. PGCPS facilities will reopen on Monday, November 29th, at their normal times.

This will require the following calendar adjustments:
  • January 31st will now be an instructional day for all students.
  • February 1st will now be a ½ Teacher Workday / ½ Professional Development Day
  • Report card distribution will move from February 2nd to February 3rd
We thank the Prince George School Board for their support of these actions.

We are thankful for the support and grace our families have provided throughout the school year for our students, faculty, and staff, helping us deliver the very best education for the children of Prince George County.
