It was a busy Monday afternoon at Prince George High School as dozens of student-athletes prepared to put on their best game faces during a unique activity hosted by the school's marketing programs.

Emulating the feel of a collegiate or major league sports organization's event, students with Prince George High School's Social Media Marketing and Sports Marketing programs set up backdrops, lights, and props for the student-athletes to use during their photo shoots Monday afternoon in the gymnasium.

As cameras flashed and lights were adjusted, Social Media Marketing teacher Mr. Chris Powell and Sports Marketing teacher Mr. Travis Carr oversaw the student-led operation, offering content suggestions and direction as the marketing students snapped hundreds of photos.

For students who opt to pursue a career in marketing after graduating from Prince George High School, events like Media Day are a staple of sports organizations large and small. Throughout the year, students in both the Social Media Marketing and Sports Marketing classes gain skills in content creation, including photography, videography, and graphic design, along with essential soft skills in communication and collaboration.
As they move into the workforce, the skills gained through hands-on events like the winter sports photoshoot will give them an edge when looking for opportunities with colleges and universities, which often have robust content-creation departments that rival those of major league sporting organizations and, eventually, the big leagues with the likes of the NFL, NBA, and other massive, multi-billion leagues that are home to some of the most recognizable sporting brands in the world.
Regularly through the event, the students stopped to review their work, collaborating on shot selection, ideas for props for the athletes, and more. The event highlights the important role communication plays in organizing a successful media day photoshoot. (PGCPS Photo)
The Social Media Marketing and Sports Marketing career and technical education clusters often collaborate outside of the new Media Day experience at the high school, most recently in the growing "Royal Games" event held earlier this month. Entering its second year as a new tradition for Prince George High School, the "Royal Games feature a mix of competitive and cooperative games akin to a pep rally while highlighting the skills of students who take a leading role in planning the games, emceeing the event, its pacing, and scheduling, alongside their teacher, Mr. Carr.
The Social Media Marketing students will provide coverage of the event, using the district's Facebook page and other channels to create engaging social media content through the use of photography and text to convey the story of the "Royal Games" in an organic way from their voice as students, with advice from Mr. Powell, who provides support and guidance on how to create compelling social media content.
A flurry of camera clicks filled the gymnasium as students captured photos on their set, with plans to produce high-quality edits for use on their social media channels. Alongside photos, some students also produced video pieces that will be used for other athletics projects. (PGCPS Photo)
